Formosa

The majority of the budget for this Asian restaurant was spent on the custom designed dining tables (which feature hot-pot cooking equipment) and the code-required tiered exhaust system which runs throughout the dining area. With little of the budget left for purely aesthetic elements - inexpensive finish materials & a skillfully manipulated color palette played a major role in the success of this project.  The concrete floors, left exposed for budget reasons, are offset by bold & warm paint colors which create a warm & inviting interior.

At the dining tables, a Corian surface was needed to surround the hot-pot cooking equipment for hygenic & safety reasons. The rest of the table, however, was constructed with p.lam for cost savings.  A dramatic table runner effect was created by purposely pairing a crisp white Corian dark colored p.lam. Inexpensive bamboo reeds create veiled privacy between seating areas. Clean-lined shelving & mirrors create inexpensive focal points at the sushi & drinking bars which flank either side of the lounge space.

The University of Iowa -
Carver-Hawkeye Arena

LEED Certified Gold

The original arena and adjoining office spaces were constructed in 1983 for this Big 10 school. The new addition includes practice gymnasiums, state-of-the-art strength training facilities, remodeled locker rooms, offices and conference rooms and two hospitality/VIP clubs. The challenging site resulted in the design a unique boomerang shaped structure.

The University wanted the interior to be timeless & aesthetically appealing to everyone from student athletes to donors.  The interior design utilitzed natural maple finishes with black accents as a subtle nod to the school colors (black and gold.)  The exterior glazing provides sunlight & access to magnificent views. Bands of translucent glass were strategically placed to filter the hot east sun and provide privacy. At night the facility glows from the inside out.

Carver-Hawkeye Arena FF+E

Coaching staff for 17 NCAA sports at the University are housed in Carver-Hawkeye. The $2.7 million package included new veneer desking for head coaches & senior administrators. The desking manufacturer was selected through a rigourous RFP process - which now serves as a template for the University.

The 'booomerang' shaped facility resulted in having to custom design every desk so it would fit in it's uniquely shaped office.  P.Lam & metal workstations for support staff are accented with maple providing seemless material palette.

The package included ergonomic task & guest seating, a variety of anciliary furniture and seating & tables for conference, meeting room & banquet areas as well as furniture for the VIP Clubs, home team locker rooms and portable luxury courtside seating in the arena.

Another facet of the project was to inventory the various existing furniture & re-use as much furniture as possible in less conspicuous areas throughout the facility.

The first level features a state-of-the-art rowing tank that can be used 365 days of the year - a great benefit for this midwest University.  Due of the cold and wet nature of the sport, great care was taken to provide a warm interior for occupants.  This is achieved through daylighting strategies and materials usage.  Warm toned accent paints, carpets and anigre veneers create a rich visual texture.  In the locker rooms, slip-resistant rubber is warm underfoot and moisture resistant phenolic lockers are create visual and tactile warmth.

The is the first LEED certified facility at the University.

FF+E was included in the scope of this project.

Iowa City Community School District
Buford Garner Elementary School

The school is organized with a series of classrooms positioned around learning centers. These flexible, multi-purpose team 'pods' provide a platform for collaborative learning opportunities and will adapt to teaching & learning styles as they evolve over time.

Color gives each pod its own identity & also assists in way-finding.  The color palette was designed to be an actual learning tool. Each pod color represents one of Iowa's 4 state symbols: state flower, the Wild Rose (red); state bird, the Eastern Goldfinch (yellow); state rock, the geode (terra cotta); & state tree, the Oak (green.)  Blue is used in the 2 corridors which flank the 'core' areas of the school to represent the 2 mighty rivers that serve as Iowa's east & west state borders.

Sustainable prinicples integrated throughout the facility such as daylight-harvesting, optimizes energy

efficiency while creating a more healthy learning environment.
